Anyone who has spent time in the Kitimat and Terrace region knows that outdoor adventure is part of what makes this area so special. One of the many local treasures is Shames Mountain, nestled in the Coastal Mountain Range and home to Canada’s first non-profit community service ski co-operative, My Mountain Co-op.

As an organization deeply embedded in the communities of the region, LNG Canada has proudly partnered with My Mountain Co-op on numerous social investments over the years. Tyler Perry, local resident and Maintenance & Turnaround Manager for LNG Canada, shared his thoughts on the relationship, saying: “Supporting our local ski hill is about more than just skiing. It’s also about creating opportunities so that everyone can experience the joy and thrill of winter sports. Together, we can foster a love for the mountains and ensure that all members of our community are able to experience our hidden gem.”

The 2024/2025 season marks the second year that LNG Canada has been title sponsor of the LNG Canada Library Snow Sports program. This initiative aims to reduce barriers to participation in mountain sports by providing free lift tickets, rentals, and lessons through community libraries in Prince Rupert, Terrace, and Kitimat.

This year, LNG Canada has also supported My Mountain Co-op through the sponsorship of several other programs, including:

  • Goodfoot Christmas and Spring Break Youth Camps
  • Northern Snow Angels Program
  • Multicultural Weekend, and
  • Pride and Diversity Weekend

Members of the LNG Canada team and their families were thrilled to be at Shames Mountain celebrating Pride and Diversity weekend on February 22nd.

Chistian Theberge, General Manager of My Recreational Mountain Cooperative, shared the impact of LNG Canada’s support to the organization, saying, “We are very grateful to have LNG Canada sponsor programming that builds community and fosters accessible, family-oriented recreational experiences. The LNG Canada Library Snowsports program has allowed existing and new skiers alike to discover and enjoy the camaraderie and joy of snow sports. By sponsoring other on-hill events, LNG Canada has helped us improve and add value to the guest experience and share it with new participants.”

Our work with Shames Mountain is just one example of how LNG Canada’s social investment with local organizations continues to build accessibility, promote diversity, and create healthier communities in the region we call home!
