Not all Indigenous leaders back UN call to stop B.C. projects

A UN anti-racism committee has called on Canada to shut down three natural resource megaprojects in B.C. because of Indigenous opposition.
The committee called on Canada to immediately stop construction of the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion, the Site C dam and the Coastal GasLink pipeline that would feed the LNG Canada project in Kitimat. That’s about $25 billion worth of projects.
It makes Indigenous leader Chris Sankey shake his head in disbelief, writes columnist Mike Smyth for the Province.
“They’re trying to dictate to the government how best to treat us, and that’s not right. We need jobs. We need to build homes and roads and schools for our kids and care centres for our elders. These projects will help us do that.”
