A Powerful Journey: How a unique training program is launching new careers in B.C.

Share

As the largest private sector investment in Canadian history, LNG Canada is delivering substantial economic benefits to British Columbia, and meaningful employment opportunities to people from across the province.

Our commitment to delivering benefits includes investments in workforce training and development programs designed to increase the participation of local area residents, Indigenous communities and British Columbians in trades and construction-related activities–including but not limited to LNG Canada.

Our innovative power engineering program is a good example. Developed in collaboration with Coast Mountain College and the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT), in consultation with the Government of British Columbia, we set out to develop a local power engineering pipeline for LNG Canada and other facilities in northwestern B.C.

An initial tuition-free readiness program commenced in January 2022 with a diverse group of 19 local area students learning about the power engineering field and future career opportunities. Eighteen individuals graduated from the readiness program in June 2022, and were able to enroll into an intensive power engineering certificate program that began in August 2022.

After months of training and dedication, graduates of the 4th Class Power Engineering certificate program have since gone on to land power engineering roles with LNG Canada and other organizations close to home. As our latest video demonstrates, they couldn’t be happier with their new career paths. We’re thrilled for them as well.

Meanwhile, we continue to work with Coast Mountain College and others to raise awareness about power engineering and potential careers in that field, with workshops and industry tours for students from local area schools and campuses.
