Supporting the Long-Term Health of Sumgas Creek

Share

The Sumgas Creek fish habitat offset is already meeting its primary purpose. Monitoring in 2025 confirmed that adult coho salmon were spawning upstream of Haisla Boulevard, showing that fish can access habitat that was previously blocked.

LNG Canada is now completing maintenance and restoration work to protect this progress and support the offset’s long-term performance.

The work includes repairing an eroded section of the creek bank between Haisla Boulevard and Columbia Avenue. Clean rock will be placed at the base of the bank, with soil lifts, native vegetation and live stakes installed above. These measures will help stabilize the bank, reduce further erosion and protect restored fish habitat.

The earthworks are planned to begin on Friday, September 25, and are expected to take up to five days, subject to weather and site conditions.

Supplemental planting will also be completed where monitoring identified gaps in tree and shrub cover. Native trees, shrubs, willows, sedges and other plants will be added, and compacted soil will be prepared to support healthy root growth. Protective shelters will be installed around young western redcedars to help reduce heat stress and browsing.

Together, this work will strengthen the creek bank, improve native vegetation cover and help maintain fish passage through the Sumgas Creek offset. Environmental monitoring and fish protection measures will be in place throughout work near the creek.
