LNG Canada provides $1.2 million in funding towards a new snowblower for Northwest Regional Airport Terrace-Kitimat

March 17, 2022, Vancouver, B.C- Northwest Regional Airport Terrace-Kitimat (YXT) has taken possession of a new, high capacity snowblower that makes snow removal on its two runways, taxiways and tarmac quicker and more efficient, improving flight arrival and departure time reliability in cold weather months and creating a safer environment for aircraft during landing, takeoff and taxiing operations.

Manufactured specifically for airports by Canadian company, Airport Technologies Inc., the Snow Wolf SB-1050 can clear 7,500 tons of snow in just 60 minutes, and has a maximum ground speed capability of 80 kilometres per hour.

LNG Canada contributed $1.2 million for the purchase of the Snow Wolf through its social investment program. The pillars of the program – workforce and enterprise, environment, community wellness and education – guide strategic investments that LNG Canada makes in the social needs and infrastructure of the communities in which it operates.

Billed as the “fastest, most powerful snow blower in the industry,” the Snow Wolf’s snow-chomping attributes and durability made it an ideal choice for YXT, which receives well over one metre of snow in a typical winter, and can get hit hard on any given day. It has already made a difference at YXT, where it replaced an older machine that needed replacement.

YXT is owned and operated by the Terrace-Kitimat Airport Society, an independent, non-governmental not-for-profit corporation. As a not-for-profit corporation, the Airport Society has no shareholders and therefore no shareholder benefits; any profit is used to improve the airport.

As one of the largest energy investments in Canadian history, the LNG Canada project is delivering substantial economic, social and community benefits to British Columbia. Since 2013, LNG Canada has delivered more than $10 million to programs benefiting Kitimat, Terrace and First Nations communities.

Other recent funding initiatives from LNG Canada include $500,000 towards the purchase of a new highway rescue vehicle for the City of Terrace Fire Department, a $750,000 commitment to support the expansion of Ocean Wise’s North Coast killer whale and humpback whale conservation research programs and deliver ocean literacy programs to Kitimat and Terrace-area schools, and $500,000 to support Kitimat and Terrace communities in British Columbia during the coronavirus pandemic.

The LNG Canada joint venture is building a liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facility in Kitimat, British Columbia, Canada, in the traditional territory of the Haisla Nation.
